Focus #3: Water
Reduction in water abstraction: Novacarb’s commitment to sustainable management
Responsible water management at the heart of our industrial performance
Water is an essential and increasingly valuable natural resource. As a committed industrial player, the Humens Group places sustainable water management and the reduction of water withdrawals at the core of its environmental strategy.
Water is a key component in the production process of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate. Our responsibility is therefore clear: to ensure industrial performance while preserving this resource and minimizing our impact on the natural environment.
Extraction and replenishment: responsible resource use
Novacarb is an industrial water user, but not a net consumer in the strict sense: almost all of the water withdrawn is returned to the natural environment after use and treatment, in full compliance with regulatory thresholds.
Water withdrawn from the Meurthe River is used for:
- The production of brine at Lenoncourt, which serves as a raw material in the industrial process
- Cooling process fluids and washing gases
After use, the water is returned to the river, with strict monitoring of physicochemical parameters through regular sampling and continuous monitoring systems.
Water withdrawn from the Marne–Rhine Canal is used for:
- The production of demineralized water to generate steam supplying industrial boilers (Novacarb, Novawood, Novacogé and Novasteam)
- Cooling installations
Part of this water is already recycled in a closed-loop system using cooling towers, thereby reducing the need for additional withdrawals.
Key figures
Water Sobriety Plan: concrete actions to reduce water withdrawals
In 2023, Novacarb signed a Water Sobriety Plan (WSP) with the French government, reaffirming its commitment to reducing water consumption in industry.
This plan is based on:
- The identification of 6 key projects aimed at reducing water withdrawals
- The development of water recycling and reuse solutions
- The continuous improvement of our water performance
Novacarb also signed an Industry Water and Climate Agreement with the Rhin-Meuse Water Agency to accelerate its investments in water optimization and efficiency.
A ministerial visit in March 2024 highlighted and commended our Water Sobriety Plan. This official recognition confirmed Novacarb’s position among committed and responsible industrial players in sustainable water management.
Industry and resource preservation: a responsible balance
Our operations require water. However, we take concrete actions to:
- Reduce our water withdrawals
- Optimize our industrial processes
- Develop internal recycling
- Ensure controlled discharge back into the natural environment
In a context of increasing pressure on water resources, the Humens Group is committed to a more responsible, more water-efficient, and more environmentally sustainable industry.
Water recycling: a project with strong regional impact
Water recycling from air compressor outlets is one of the major projects undertaken. Since its commissioning in July 2025, it has enabled savings of 400,000 m³ of water.
For comparison, the Rhin-Meuse Water Agency’s 12th program (2025–2030) sets an overall target of reducing water withdrawals by 6 million m³ over the duration of the program. On its own, our project could account for nearly 70% of one year of the regional target, clearly illustrating the scale of our contribution.
Through this initiative, Novacarb positions itself as a leading industrial player in water efficiency and environmental performance.
